The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves) and the body does the rest, responding in its own time, as it is able. Bowen addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors.
Most people live in a state of high stress and sympathetic ANS over-stimulation (fight, flight or freeze mode). Healing can occur only after ANS shifts from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance (rest, relax and repair mode). Bowen is the catalyst for that shift.

During treatments, clients quickly drop into relaxation or fall asleep. Bowen seems to re-activate the recovery process in situations where healing from trauma, sickness or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau. Sessions generally last from 15 minutes to 90 minutes. The process is gentle and can be done through clothing. The client usually lies on a massage table or can be seated in a chair.
A session can involve one or more procedures, each of which consists of several sets of moves. Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the client’s body to begin responding. In contrast to other bodywork modalities where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique performed, Bowen allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention.

The Bowen technique is appropriate to use for individuals of all ages and in all degrees of health given a few specific situations in which a particular procedure is contraindicated.

This is unique to the individual. For most chronic conditions, 5-9 treatments on a fortnightly basis tend to offer the best outcome. Some people notice an immediate improvement in their health while for others Bowen tends to have a cumulative effect over several visits.
